Thomas Wright Kirby autobiography and diary

Scope and Contents Photocopy of a handwritten autobiography and diary. These materials were created when Kirby was in the territorial penitentiary of Utah for polygamy. Kirby was born in England, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1852, performed missionary work in England, migrated to Utah in 1863 where he lived in several different places, took additional wives, joined the United Order, and went to prison for polygamy. Eliza Maria Partridge Lyman diary

Scope and Contents

Photocopy of a typescript of a diary kept by Patridge. The item begins with a brief autobiography. Lyman writes about being sealed to the first president of the Mormon Church, Joseph Smith, her marriage to Amasa Lyman after Smith's death, her life in Nauvoo, Illinois, her migration to Utah, the excommunication of her husband from the Mormon Church, her life in Fillmore, Utah, and her efforts in favor of the Mormon practice of polygamy.

John Needham diary and autobiography

Scope and Contents

Typewritten copy of a diary from 1840-1842. Needham writes about his conversion, missionary activies in England and Wales, faith promoting experiences, persecutions, and also gives details of the organization of branches in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including names and dates of baptisms and ordinations of the members. Also included is a five-page typescript of an autobiography written late in the nineteenth century when Needham lived in Logan, Utah.

Charles M. Nielsen diary

Scope and Contents

Handwritten diary and record book. Nielsen kept his diary while serving on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Minnesota and Wisconsin from 1883-1885. Nielsen also writes about his experiences in Salt Lake City, Utah, after his mission and his political activies. Also included is a patriarchal blessing given to Nielsin in 1876.

Contains the original handwritten diary of Emma Wartstill (or Waitstill) Mecham Nielson that includes the time period from 1887 to 1916, with diary entries spanning from 1887 to 1897 and financial records spanning from 1914 to 1916. Diary is during the seven-month period Nielson was living by herself with her children in St. George, Utah, her daily activities as a mother and active church member, and her relationship with her fellow plural wife. Polygamy article

Scope and Contents

Two anonymous, photocopied articles relating to Mormon polygamy. One is typewritten and outlines the author's belief that the Mormon Church was in error when it discontinued plural marriage. Five leaves of the document (pages 8-15) are missing. The other item is a holograph manuscript which tells about the issuing of the "Manifesto" in 1890 which formally ended polygamy among the Mormons.
