Biography of John Olney Adams (native pioneer) and his wife, Mattie Marie Peterson

Scope and Contents

Photocopy of a microfilmed copy of a typewritten biography. John Olney Adams was born in American Fork, Utah, in 1861 and Mattie Marie Peterson was born in 1864 in Denmark. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and migrated to Utah. They married in 1884. John died in 1932 in Bingham, Utah, and Mattie died in 1928.

William Ajax journals

Scope and Contents Contains holographs, photographs, and typescripts of journals, dated July 20 to December 27, 1861, and January 1, 1862 to December 31, 1863. The journals describe Ajax's activities as a missionary for the Mormon Church in England and Wales and include some newspaper clippings, part of which are from the Udgorn Seion, the Mormon publication in Wales. The clippings include British Mormon emigration statistics from 1841-1861. Ajax immigrated to the United States in 1862. Detailed diary entries...

William Snow autobiography

Scope and Contents

Handwritten autobiographical materials. Snow writes about his early life in Vermont, conversion to the Mormon Church, and missionary work. Some genealogy and patriarchal blessings are included. Snow made the overland journey by ox team from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Salt Lake City in 1850. He writes of numerous deaths from cholera, problems with company discipline, and travelling conditions.

James I. Steel autobiography and family records

Scope and Contents

Photocopy of a handwritten autobiography with family records apparently also copied by Steel. James Steel converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England and migrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1854. He later settled in Tooele County, Utah. Steel entered into polygamy in 1874. Also included are ordinations and patriarchal blessings of family members. Steel also writes about his visions and dreams.

Henry Ballard diary

Scope and Contents Two typescripts of the Ballard diary. They vary in small details and in the nature of the added materials found at the back. Ballard was converted to Mormonism in England. He arrived in Utah in 1852, was active in the Utah War of 1857-8, and settled in Logan, Utah in 1859. He was a bishop for the Mormon Church, participated in many of the activities of that faith, and was sentenced to two months in the Utah penitentiary for polygamy. Typewritten copy of an autobiography. Ballard writes about her early life in Scotland as a Mormon, her migration to the United States in 1856 and her subsequent migration to Utah in 1859, and her life as a polygamous wife in Logan, Utah. Ballard also tells about encounters with Indians while coming to Utah, and when she was living in Logan.
