East was captured by the Japanese in the Philippines in April 1942 and survived the Bataan Death March and over three years as a prisoner of war in the Philippines and Japan. His autobiograpy mainly deals with his sufferings as a prisoner of war and with his faith in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
