Samuel H. B. Smith diary

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of photocopies of Smith's mission diary, his autobiography, some correspondence, and records of ordinances performed in the Endowment House in the 1870s. Smith kept his diary while serving on a mission to Great Britain (1860-1863). He recorded the activities and experiences of missionary life and activities. The autobiography is brief and covers from Smith's birth to 1857.

Content Description

Contains a round wooden box that belonged to Eliza R. Snow. It was donated to the BYU President's Office in 1973 by H. R. Wilson of Santa Rosa, California. According to description by donor, the box belonged to Eliza R. Snow and was used when going to Utah in early 1846-1847. The box includes a wooden spoon that supposedly came with the box.

Content Description Handwritten letter sent by Erastus Snow to James McGaw. Letter is signed for Erastus Snow by James M. Brown and sent from St. Louis, Missouri. This letter discusses the passage of Latter-day Saint member James Mather and his family from Liverpool, England to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1855. Elder James M. Brown, writing for Apostle Erastus Snow, sent this receipt and order to Elder James McGaw in Atchison, Kansas Territory to supply Mather with wagons and oxen for the overland trip to Utah....

Photocopy of a handwritten autobiography with a typescript of the item. Also included are brief biographies of family members and patriarchal blessings. The date of the composition of the item is uncertain. Solomon writes about joining the Mormon Church, migrating to Utah, serving on a mission to the Indians of Arizona, meeting John D. Lee, and moving to Kanab, Utah.

George Spilsbury autobiography

Handwritten autobiography with a photocopy of the item. The volume includes handwritten copies of letters received and patriarchal blessings of family members. Spilsbury writes about travelling in southern Utah as a patriarch, gives a brief description of his mission to Wales, talks about some of the prophecies of the first president of the LDS Church, Joseph Smith (1805-1844), and describes the exodus west of Mormons from Nauvoo, Illinois to Utah. Collection contains the mission diaries of John and Mahonri M. Steele. Included in the diaries of John are day to day descriptions of his time serving as a Mormon missionary, and serving in the Mormon Battalion. He also gives some family history and autobiographical information about his life prior to the journal. The journals written by Mahonri M. Steele tell about his time as a Mormon missionary to England and Scotland.

Kanute Swensen diaries

Scope and Contents

Handwritten diaries with bound photostat copies of the items. The first two volumes, covering the years 1857 to 1868, are in Danish, while the remainder are in English. Also included is a typewritten translation into English of the diaries for the years 1857 and 1858 when Swensen was serving a mission for the Mormon Church in Denmark. Swensen writes about his immigration to Utah and his life in Pleasant Grove.
