Scope and Contents Handwritten diary of Cone's overland journey by ox team from Waukesha, Wisconsin to California in 1849. Cone is a descriptive writer and proud to record "only facts." Diary describes traveling conditions, encounters with Indians, cholera outbreaks, fellow travelers, and government assistance at the end of the trail. Henry Decamp letter

Scope and Contents

Holograph letter and typewritten copy. The item was written by Henry Decamp, in Sacramento, California, to his wife, Anne Mariah DeCamp, on 19 Aug. 1850. Henry arrived at the mines of Hang Town on 16 July and worked in the mines there "four days and made from 2 to 9 dollars per day." He later worked "getting timber." Henry expressed sorrow in now receiving a letter from his wife and indicated that he was homesick and wanted to return home soon.

William Farrer diaries and letters

Contains seven handwritten volumes, plus typescripts which focus on Farrer's Hawaiian Mission, 1850-1854. Volume one contains accounts of his work in the California gold fields prior to his mission call. Volume seven is entirely in the Hawaiian language. Also included are photocopies of typescripts of 71 letters written to and by Farrer when he served in the Hawaiian Islands.

Typewritten copy of an article originally published in the "Juvenile Instructor" of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1896. Hammond was a sailor who met the Mormons in California. Hammond writes about joining that faith and about coming to Utah by way of California in 1848. He tells about contacts with Momons in California and talks about making shoes.
