Leonard J. Arrington letters

Scope and Contents This collection contains 28 folders, housed in 2 hollinger boxes. The collection is approximately 1500 pages long. This collection is a compilation of letters that Arrington wrote to his children once they were all out of the house. His secretary, Chris Croft, typed and xeroxed a large portion of the letters. Barton Orville Aylesworth correspondence

Scope and Contents This collection consists of letters sent to Barton Orville Aylesworth in response to his inquiries. Aylesworth asked these writers of both fiction and factual books to tell him about themselves and about their writings. The replies were mostly short, autobiographical, and often included lists of publications. The letters were usually hand-written and were signed by the authors. Collection consists of letters to and from Aylesworth. They request biographical information from important literary and political figures in America roughly at the turn of the century. Also included are the replies to these petitions. The responses often contain some biographical information and lists of works published by the authors. It is likely that Aylewsorth's request were attempts to collect autographs of prominent individuals.

A. S. Balestier letter

Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter dated 6 Aug. 1895 and addressed to H. B. Tedrow, an autograph collector in Omaha, Nebraska. Balestier writes that Rudyard Kipling will return to Vermont in September and will only give his autograph to those who first contribute $2.50 to "The Tribune Fresh Air Fund" of New York.

Printed item commemorating the founding of the New England Women's Club. The item was hand addressed to Mrs. Mary J. Judah and signed by the president of the club, Julia Ward Howe, in November 1892. The item includes all five verses of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and an account by Mrs. Howe of how she came to write the poem.

Original pen and ink drawing, initialed, and dated 24 Feb. 1893. The item depicts a mother mouse holding a baby mouse with two other mice in a cradle. This is one of a set of six drawings intended to illustrate "There was an old woman who lived in a shoe," which was never published. It was later used in "Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes." It was also used in "The Tale of Two Bad Mice."
