Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter dated 8 Sept. 1941 and addressed to Norah Hoult (1901-1984), an Irish writer. Hartley had written a review of a novel "Smilin' on the Vine" by Hoult in which he was somewhat critical of the work. Hartley responds to a letter from Hoult and essentially concedes that some of his criticisms were overstated.

Handwritten and signed letters addressed to Reginal Littleboy from 1921 through 1969. Littleboy was a life-long friend who lived in Sussex, England. The letters relate many of Hartley's life experiences, reflections on associate authors, and also comment on writing.

The second, dated 23 March 1956, relates gratitude for Horner's congratulations on his receipt of a C.B.E. A letter dated 6 November 1956 and written from Venice gives a detailed description of the advantages and disadvantages of the Hotel Regina, and relates news of Victor Cunard and Freya Stark. John Hay letters

Scope and Contents

Two letters written at Washington D.C. one handwritten and signed, the other typescript and signed. The handwritten item was written on Nov. 23, 1903. It is written to "Dear Uncle Grover" and gives particulars about Hay's biography of Abraham Lincoln. The typescript letter was written on Nov. 10, 1903. It is written to Charles Neumeyer, Esq. explaining that he does not know if Hay's "works" have been translated into German.
