Interviews with former slaves in Alabama

Scope and Contents

Photocopies of microfilmed copies of typewritten interviews. These interviews were conducted under the authority of the Federal Writers' Project for the WPA. The former slaves discuss their earlier experiences in servitude. They talk about being made free and their encounters with the Ku-Klux Klan (1866-1869).

Charles H. White and John Francis Perkins journals

The collection contains six journals of Charles H. White beginning on May 17, 1899 - March 5, 1901, plus one missionary notebook. It also contains one volume of the Southern States Mission Journal of John Francis Perkins, July 14, 1899 - June 11, 1900, and two copies of Perkins' missionary blessing given by President Seymour B. Young.
