Era P. Lowe biography

This collection consists of 12 leaves photocopied from a typewritten newspaper article authored by Era P. Lowe, son of Thomas G. Lowe who was a Mormon pioneer; Indian scout, missionary, and colonizer. Thomas Lowe also built tabernacles and other community buildings under the direction of Brigham Young and John Taylor. Thomas was held in high regard among the Mormons, non-Mormons, and Indians alike and served in many community and Mormon Church positions.

Scope and Contents Includes summary of Monroe's activities from September 1841 through June 1842, including his conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and activities as clerk of the Utica (New York) Conference. Then follows attendance record for a school he taught at Nauvoo, Illinois, August 1842- January 1843 and November 1843-March 1844. Last part of journal tells of his service as teacher of the children of Joseph Smith, John Taylor, and Brigham Young, April-May 1845. Typed title...

Katharine Smith Salisbury correspondence

Photocopies of handwritten letters and typed copies of correspondence. Salisbury writes to the Mormon Church leaders Brigham Young (1801-1877), Orson Pratt (1811-1881), and John Taylor (1808-1887) requesting funds. One letter in the collection is from Brigham Young. Two of the items were written by Salisbury to her "Dear Sister" (probably her sister-in-law, Samantha) in 1853 and 1854 lamenting the death of a family member, "Jenkins."

Photocopy of a handwritten and signed letter dated 1 Feb. 1845 and addressed to Daniel Webster of Boston, Massachusetts. The item was also signed by Willard Richards, William W. Phelps, John Taylor, and other prominent leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Young asks for legal advice concerning the repeal of the Nauvoo City charter by the Illinois state legislature.
