James Allen and R. B. Mitchell letters

Scope and Contents

Handwritten and signed letter, dated 16 July 1846, and composed at the "Headquarters Morm. Batt. U.S. Volunteers." Allen writes about the march to California and the necessity of protection against Indians. On the reverse of Allen's letter is found a handwritten letter, dated 21 July 1846, and signed by R. B. Mitchell, "Indian Agent." The item was composed at "Point aux Poules." Mitchell praises the conduct of the emigrating Mormons in general and with the Indians in particular.

Scope and Contents Transcript (32 pages) and audiocassette recording of an interview with veteran Lee Allen conducted by Mark D. Bell for the Ray Hillam project, dated approximately 1985. Allen went to Vietnam in 1962 and was never wounded. He discusses the brutality of the enemy during the war. He says that the United States press did a poor job in reporting the war, failed to note how brutal the enemy was, and wrongly indicated that the war could not be won. Scope and Contents Holograph letters dating from July 1884 to June 1886 written to the family of Reuben A. Allen, many of who were living in Freeport, Ohio. At this time Allen was an Indian agent at the Crow-Blackfoot Agency in Piegan, Montana. Most of the letters are written from Reuben and his daughter, Nora, and Lyde, who may be Reuben's wife, Eliza.
