Lorraine Morton Ashton collection on Ermel J. Morton

Scope and Contents Collection consists of papers relating to the dictionary Ermel J. Morton, a Mormon missionary who went to Tonga, created from English to Tongan and Tongan to English, his accounts of his mission and translating the Book of Mormon, a history of his wife, a catalog of his materials from home, a typed copy of the talks at his funeral and a Tongan grammar book. There is also a book written about the time the family spent in Tonga.

Willard Washington Bean autobiography,|f1880-1978.

Scope and Contents Softbound photocopy of a typewritten autobiography which includes a newsclipping from "The Church News." Willard W. Bean served the Mormon Church for 29 years and acquired many properties for the Mormon Church in New York State, including the Hill Cumorah.

Willard Washington Beans papers

Scope and Contents Photocopies of a typewritten autobiography, a newspaper clipping, a Mormon Church blessing, and an essay. Also included are photocopies of handwritten letters received by Bean. These items include letters received from Mormon Church leaders Heber J. Grant and J. Golden Kimball. Bean was a missionary to the Southern States and lived in Palmyra, New York from 1915 to 1939.

Edward L. Black autobiography

Scope and Contents Typescript and photocopy of missionary experiences by Edward L. Black. Black tells of many faith-promoting events while a missionary in Florida, his experiences with ministers of different denominations, and his fellow missionaries in the field.

Lorenzo Brown diary and autobiography

Scope and Contents Materials contain Brown's handwritten diary and autobiography. Brown's record starts with an autobiography which takes him to the year 1856 when his diary begins. Describes his conversion to the Mormon Church, life in Nauvoo, Illinois, and relationship with Joseph Smith, the first president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Brown then describes his migration to Salt Lake City, Utah, settling in Las Vegas, Nevada, move to the St. George, Utah area, service on a mission for the...

George Crane autobiography

Scope and Contents Handwritten autobiography composed near the year 1912. Crane was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after he heard Orson Pratt (1811-1881), apostle for that religion, speak in England in 1864. He later served as president of the Wandsworth Branch of the Church. He migrated to Utah. Crane also writes about his courtship and marriage and about his mission to England from 1878 to 1880.

John Evans diary and autobiography

Scope and Contents Typescripts of diary and an autobiography. In his 1881 diary, Evans describes his activities as a Mormon missionary in Wales. In his personal history, he writes about his conversion to the Mormon faith in Great Britain, his migration to Utah, and his experiences in Brigham City, Utah.

James Madison Flake diaries

Scope and Contents Handwritten diary kept from 1887 to 1889 when Flake was a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England. Also included is a handwritten autobiography and diary. Flake summarizes his life to the year 1888 at which time he began a diary with many gaps and many short entries. Dates range from 1887 to 1929.

John R. Halliday memoirs

Scope and Contents Includes a two-page vita, and recollections of the author's ancestors, family and youth; professional life; church activities; and hobbies. He served a Latter-day Saint mission in Germany, 1931-1933; studied music at the State Academy of Music in Berlin, Germany, 1933-1934; and worked in the Department of Music at Brigham Young University, 1936-1938 and again beginning in 1942. Material was dictated by John R. Halliday in June 1971, and later transcribed.

Jobe Hill autobiography

Scope and Contents Handwritten autobiography. Hill writes about migrating to Utah, about his life in Smithfield and Clarkston, about problems with grasshoppers, and about other difficult situations. He also talks about the death of his mother and his low opinion of his father, who started drinking. He also tells about his mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to England and about his marriage.
