Printed form with handwritten entries. The item is dated 11 March 1863 and was signed by Lincoln and William Henry Seward, secretary of state of the United States. Lincoln appoints John J. Henry of Delaware to be the commissioner and consul general of the United States in Liberia.

Charles Shuster Zane autobiography

Scope and Contents

Mimeographed copy of a typewritten autobiography. Zane writes about his early life as a student and as a lawyer in Springfield, Illinois. He tells about his personal acquaintance with Abraham Lincoln and about hearing Lincoln give formal speeches on several occasions. Zane was appointed a federal judge in 1884 for the territory of Utah and writes about presiding over a number of important cases relating to polygamy in Utah. He later practiced law in Utah.

Phineas Densmore Gurley letter

Handwritten and signed letter written in Washington DC, dated Oct. 31, 1862, and addressed to Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), President of the United States. Gurley states that the Reverend Alexander W. Sproull is of good character and is very devoted to his work. He recommends Sproull for the position of "Hospital Chaplaincy."

Handwritten and printed appeal bond. The item records the obligation of the plaintiff, John Boyuton, to pay defendant Jabez A. Bebe the sum of fifteen dollars. The document claims to be taken from a judgement rendered by justice of the peace Abraham Lincoln and was approved by court clerk Jacob Cunningham Davis.
