Biographical / Historical
The Nauvoo Legion was organized by the Mormons in Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1840, under a special charter granted by the Illinois legislature. It was a special militia organization formed to protect the community. After the Mormons were driven from Nauvoo, the Nauvoo Legion was reorganized in Utah in 1852, which included the veterans from the Mormon Battalion. It was eliminated in 1887.
