Scope and Contents

Handwritten and signed letter of instructions for British ambassador Sir William Arthur White dated January 1, 1887 at the British court at Osborne. The letter gives instructions to White for his visit to the court of the Ottoman Emperor Abdul-Hamid II. The instructions include reminders and points of concern such as the need to perform properly in court, the importance of being attentive to any overtures that may lead to a change in present treaties, requests to discover the extent and form of the Ottoman Empire especially in regards to its involvement with foreign powers, and the necessity to always keep in mind "matters which may relate to our service, and to the advantage of our dominions." The manuscript is held together with ornate Royal Seal and blue silk ties.
