Biographical History

Margaret Maw (1874-1966) was a student at Brigham Young Academy, teacher, and author.

Margaret Peterson Maw was born in Deseret, Utah in 1874. After a visit from George H. Brimhall, she felt it possible for her to attend Brigham Young Academy. She achieved that goal and after her first year, President Brimhall recommended her for a teaching position in Spring Lake. He told her it would be challenging, and after one week she came to him in tears saying, "Brother Brimhall! I've expelled a boy the first week--it happens its [sic] the boy where I board too--I didn't know it at the time. . . . I threw him out by the coat collar." Maw recalled that after she had finished, Brimhall said, "What are you crying for? You're in! You've done just what had to be done. You'll have no more trouble over there. You've made it, girl! I'm proud of you." Maw completed that year of teaching and became one of the county's finest teachers. She went on to become and author. She died in 1966.
