Administrative History

The Department of Theatre and Media Arts (1997- ) at Brigham Young University is a part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications.

The Department of Theatre and Media Arts has been a part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications since 1997. It was previously known as the Department of Visual Arts. The Department of Theatre and Media Arts is directly managed by a Department Chair who acts under the direction of the College Dean. The Department Chairs are: Eric Fielding (1997-1998), Robert A. Nelson (1998-2005), Rodger D. Sorensen (2005-present).

Administrative History

The Department of Theatre and Film (1988-1997) was part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

The Department of Theatre and Film was part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications beginning in 1988. Previously, the department was known as the Department of Theatre, Speech, and Cinema. In 1997 the name of the department was changed to Theatre and Media Arts. The Department Chairs were: Harold R. Oaks (1988-1994) and Eric Fielding (1994-1997).

The function of the department was to foster disciplined scholars and artist, committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ, who so excel in their personal conduct and professional skill that they are sought as models of leadership, inspiration and achievement. Also to provide comprehensive programs designed to produce graduates and products that delight, edify, and enlarge the human spirit. The Department of Theatre and Film was directly managed by a Department Chair who was under the direction of the College Dean.

Degrees offered are Film (BFA); Musical Dance Theatre (BFA); Film (B.A.); Speech (B.A.); Theatre Arts (B.A.); Theatre Arts Education (B.A.); Acting (MFA); Directing (MFA); Playwriting (MFA); Theatre Design and Technology (MFA); Theatre History, Theory, Criticism (M.A.); Motion Picture History, Theory, Criticism (M.A.); Child Drama (M.A.) and Theatre, and Cinema (Ph.D.) The Department of Theatre, Speech, and Cinema was directly managed by a Department Chair who was under the direction of the College Dean.

Administrative History

The Department of Theatre and Cinematic Arts (1975-1987) offered courses in film and theatre arts at Brigham Young University.

In 1975 the Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts was renamed the Department of Theatre and Cinematic Arts. This department offered students a comprehensive education in the art, production, history, and technical elements of theatre, film, and videotape production. In 1987 it was renamed the Department of Theatre, Speech, and Cinema. Charles L. Metten (1976-1980) and Harold R. Oakes (1980-1987) served as department chairs durring its existance.

Administrative History

The Department of Visual Arts (1996-) is a department in the College of Fine Arts and Communications at Brigham Young University.

The Department of Visual Arts was established as a part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications in 1996 with the merging of the Department of Art and the Department of Design. The Department Chairs are: Michael D. Day (1996-1998), Mark J. Johnson (1998-2004), John W. Telford (2004-2006), and Linda Sullivan (2006).

The Department of Visual Arts was established to prepare competent professionals in various fields of plastic and graphic arts, to prepare qualified designers in problem solving of two- and three-dimensional application, to train historians who can critically appraise works of art, to prepare art educators to teach visual arts at various levels, and to help individuals develop their aesthetic sense.
