Biographical / Historical

James Russell Ivie was born on December 30, 1802, to Anderson Ivie and Sarah Allred in Franklin, Georgia. He married Eliza McKee in 1824 and moved to Shelbyville, Tennessee. The family learned about the newly-forming Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1832, and swiftly joined, moving to Kirtland, Ohio. He followed wherever the Church body went, living in Nauvoo and Iowa before deciding to make the trip out west, where he trekked 2,000 miles to San Diego, California. He was also one of the original settlers of Fort Utah, now known as Provo, Utah. Ivie served as the captain of the company asked to settle Mount Pleasant, Utah, as well. Ivie was killed in a skirmish with Native Americans on June 10, 1866, in Scipio, Utah.
