Scope and Contents

Papers of the Fisk family of Michigan, Connecticut, and New York, dated 1831-1895. Contains multiple letters sent from Leander Fisk and his wife Fannie Fisk, Clinton B. Fisk, Hannah Stearns, and Lydia Powell. Leander and Fannie write of a journey to the California gold fields and their home in Oakland, California. Letters discuss travels, family matters, including condolences on deaths, and a pension request sent to the United States Department of Interior. Collection also includes mortgages, deeds, and leases, a sheet of accounts, and a clipping about Clinton B. Fisk. The earliest document is an original indenture dated 1831 for purchase of land in Michigan. Contains 30 items total.

Biographical / Historical

Benjamin Bigford Fisk (1794-1832) married Lydia Aldrich (1796-1879) on April 12, 1816, in Connecticut. They had six sons: Cyrus B., Leander, Welcome V., Horace A., Clinton Bowen, and Benjamin W. These sons were born in Connecticut, New York, and Michigan. Leander Fisk married Fannie Ellis in Michigan in 1857. They migrated from Michigan to Oakland, California, in 1853. Clinton Bowen Fisk was a financier and served as a Brigadier General in Missouri during the Civil War. He later founded Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. Cyrus B., Welcome V., Horace A., and Benjamin W. all lived and died in Michigan.
