Scope and Contents

Contains typewritten copies of four letters written by Jacob Scott. Scott lived in Nauvoo, Illinois when these items were written. He writes about personal and family matters, the death of his mother, religious matters, and life in Nauvoo. The items are addressed to Scott's daughter, Mary Warnock. The transcription of the items was produced by Alba Ellsworth. The letters are originally dated 1842-1844.

Biographical History

Jacob Scott (1782-1845) was an early Mormon convert and teacher from Ireland.

Jacob Scott was born August 12, 1782 in Londonberry, Ireland. He married Sarah Warnock on January 5, 1804, in Armagh, Ireland. Jacob made his living as a teacher in Belfast, Ireland. Sometime after 1816 he moved his family to Canada, and later moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. Jacob was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on March 22, 1837. While in Nauvoo, he worked as a farmer. Jacob died in Nauvoo on January 2, 1845.

The Archives of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (now Community of Christ) allowed the Historical Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to make copies of the typescripts of these letters. These copies were likely donated to the repository by the Historical Department.
