Scope and Contents

Handwritten diaries, notebook, and letter of Mary Ann Burnham Freeze, a Latter-day Saint woman. Freeze writes about her life in Salt Lake City and in Logan, Utah. She served as a member of the General Board of the Young Ladies' National Mutual Improvement Association of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She writes about her various family and social activities, including her account of living in a polygamous household. Materials dated 1875-1899.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Ann Burnham Freeze was born October 12, 1845, in Nauvoo, Illinois to Mary Ann Huntley and James Lewis Burnham Jr. The family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1851, eventually settling in Logan, Utah, in 1861. Mary Ann Burnham Freeze married James Perry Freeze Jr. on March 8, 1863, in Richmond, Utah. She was one of four polygamous wives in the Freeze household and had 10 children. Freeze published poems and articles in various publications in Utah such as Women's Exponent and Young Woman’s Journal. She was active in literary clubs and the suffrage movement and served for 27 years as an officer in the Young Ladies’ Mutual Improvement Association. In her roles for the Mutual Improvement Association, she traveled to different locations to give motivational speeches to young women. Mary Ann Burnham Freeze died January 21, 1912, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
