Biographical HIstory

Norman David Shumway (1934-) is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives from California.

Norman D. Shumway was born July 28, 1934 in Phoenix, Arizona. Between 1954 and 1958, he served as a missionary to Japan. Afterwards, he moved to California and studied at Stockton College, later graduating from the University of Utah with a degree in political science in 1960. That same year, he married Luana Schow; they currently have six children. In 1963, he graduated from the University of California with a Juris Doctor degree (J.D.).

In 1974, Norman was appointed to the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors and was elected chairman of the same in 1978. In November 1978, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from California's 14th Congressional District and remained in that position until 1990.

After retiring from Congress, Norman worked a number of positions including Public Utilities Commissioner for the State of California and board member for Goodwill Industries, Omniplex, Ltd., and the Board of Visitors of the J. Reuben Clark Law School.

From 1996 to 1999 he was president of the Japan Hiroshima Mission.
