Scope and Contents

Contains materials pertaining to the life of Leland Ira Selvey, particularly in relation to his time serving in France during World War I. Included are souvenirs from France, such as guidebooks, a single feather, postcards, and printed ephemera. Also includes handwritten letters from family and friends, scrapbooks, notebooks, diaries, and 259 photographs and negatives. Dated 1905-1927, with the bulk dated 1918-1919.

Biographical History

Leland I. Selvey (1895-1979) was a typist in the United States Army, serving in France during World War I.

Born on September 10, 1895, in Lamar, Missouri, Leland I. Selvey spent his life in Lamar except for his stint in World War I. His role in France was as a typist, and he worked on the second treaty of Versailles. His experience in post–armistice France included good food, theater attendance, and travel to Versailles and other sites in France. After World War I, Selvey returned to Lamar and was very active in the community, serving on the school board and as a PTA president. Selvey married Lois Marguerite Bloomer (1916–2005) in 1941. He was also involved in veterans’ groups like Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Selvey passed away on October 18, 1979, in Lamar, Missouri.
