Biographical History

Kermit H. Smith (1926-2007) was an early missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina and an educator at California State University, Sacramento.

Kermit H. Smith was born in Fruita, Colorado on September 5, 1926 to Mary Abigail Hancock and Randolph Edwin Smith. During World War II in 1944 he joined the United States Navy, but the war ended before his training was complete. He went on to serve a mission from 1949-1952 in Argentina. Throughout his life he would make many visits to Central America and Spain.

On August 26, 1952 Kermit H. Smith married Dixie L. Almond, and the couple had eight children. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Brigham Young University and a PhD from UCLA in 1963. He served for twenty-eight years at California State University in Sacramento as a teacher and chairman. During his career he founded the 3-Summer MA program in Spain, Peru, and Mexico.

Kermit H. Smith died on January 31, 2007 in Wilton, California.
