Biographical / Historical

Daniel Garber (1880-1958) was an American impressionist painter.

Daniel Garber was born on April 11, 1880 in Manchester, Indiana. As a young boy he gained a love for art and in 1897 he began studying at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.

In 1897 he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. It is here that he met his wife, Mary Franklin, who was also an art student. He opened a studio in Philadelphia in 1901, working at a portraitist and commercial artist. In 1905, he and his wife moved to Europe where they both furthered their art education. It is there that he gained an appreciation for impressionist painting.

He and Mary returned to Pennsylvania in 1907 where he continued to paint. In 1909 he began teaching at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He instructed there for 41 years.

Garber received many awards of recognition for his works throughout his lifetime. His art is still shown in various galleries across the nation.

He passed away on his farm in Cuttalossa, Pennsylvania on July 5, 1958.
