Contains materials related to the life of George Benjamin Wallace. Includes a family bible, a scrapbook full of newspaper clippings, two notebooks documenting his journey as a pioneer and other personal matters, and a small purse. The purse contains newspaper clippings, sonnets written by Wallace, letters, receipts, account statements and land certificates, and other materials particularly pertaining to the church. Contents are dated approximately 1815-1902.

Biographical / Historical

George Benjamin Wallace (1817-1900) was a Mormon pioneer.

George Benjamin Wallace was born on February 16, 1817, in Epsom, New Hampshire, to parents John and Mary True Wallace. As he got older he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where he started his own lumber business. Here he was converted to Mormonism and in 1844 he moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. He married Melissa Mandana King on June 4, 1845, in Nauvoo, Illinois.

In 1847, he was appointed captain of a group of pioneers travelling to the Salt Lake Valley. They arrived there in September of that year. He was soon after called on a mission and served from 1850-1852 in England. On October 15, 1852, he married Martha Davis, Lydia Davis, and Hannah Davis. Wallace had 17 children.

He spent the rest of his life in service to the church, serving as stake president and fulfilling other various callings. He passed away on January 30, 1900 in Granger, Utah. He was buried in Salt Lake City, Utah, on February 4, 1900.

Collection was passed down family lines from to Lynn Wallace. He entrusted them to Jeffrey S. Hardey who donated the collection in 2012.
