Biographical History

Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894) was a physician, poet, essayist, and novelist in Massachusetts.

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. was born on August 29, 1809 to Abiel Holmes and Sarah Wendell. He had a varied career as a physician, poet, essayist, and novelist. He attended Harvard College, where he had some legal training. He later received a medical degree from Harvard in 1836. He spent much of his career as a physician teaching at Harvard Medical School. He married Amelia Lee Jackson in 1840 and had two sons and a daughter. Holmes died in Boston on October 7, 1894.
