Scope and Contents

Contains the journals of Robert Schmid, where he details the daily occurrences of his life and career. He discusses the biographical sketch about himself, including his birth, his family's conversion in Switzerland, their immigration to Idaho. Contains record of his mission to Europe. Writes about his farewell, his travels, and his investigators. Talks about his return from the mission field, then discusses some work he did gardening, tracks some purchases he made, mentions family events and other work photographing refining plants. Tracks his work as a rancher and income, as well as tithing contributions. He also writes about his marriage and children, and his opinions on world events like World War II. Many journals also contain photocopies of various newspaper articles and obituaries about his friends, family, and himself. Includes digital records of the journals as well. Dated circa 1875-1961.

Biographical History

Robert Schmid (1875-1961) was a Swiss Mormon convert and rancher in Idaho.

Robert Schmid was born on September 5, 1875 to Karl August and Anna Landert Schmid. He was born in a town near Zurich, Switzerland. His parents were converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1880. He immigrated with his family from Switzerland to Bear Lake, Idaho in 1886. He married Conra Anne Shumay on December 10, 1919. Together, they had three children: Anna Lucy (1920-1966), and twins Robert Hyrum and Mary (both born and died in 1921). Corna herself died in December of 1921. Robert remarried to Nellie Parker on June 26, 1923. Together, they had ten children. Schmid was occupied as a rancher after his immigration, living in Georgetown, Idaho. He died on April 4, 1961, and is buried in Bear Lake, Idaho.
