Biographical History

John Russell Mitcheltree (1928-1997) was an organist and choir master all over the world and arranged and composed religious music.

John Mitcheltree married Helen Banzhaf on June 9, 1952 in Denver, Colorado. After attending a school that was located in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and serving in the military, he went to the University of Colorado and received a BA in Philoshopy. He then furthered his education by going to New York University to get an MA in Musicology, and then to the University of Utah to get his PhD in Composition.

His composition for carillon was played at the Vatican Pavilion of the Brussels Worlds Fair. At the time of his death he had just finished composing a group of hymn tune settings for the Anglican Church in South Australia.

In Salt Lake City, he served at All Saints Episcopal Church, Community of Grace Presbyterian, and Christ Lutheran as organist or choir master.

He was a member of the Royal School of Church Music. He founded and directed a Jr. Choir Camp while he was the organist/choir master at the Church of St. Stephen the Martyr-Edina, Minnesota.
