Collection contains materials collected by Maurice Riley throughout his career as a violist. Dates range from approximately 1951 to 1995. It includes correspondence with other musicians and composers, research, publications promoting the viola and education, videos, photographs, and music journals. Also contains materials from various viola congresses he attended.

Biographical History

Maurice W. Riley (1911-1997) was a violist who served as the American Viola Society President from 1981 to 1986.

Maurice Winton Riley was born November 24, 1911 in Kansas City, Missouri. He studied music at Colorado State Teachers College. Maurice taught in public school and served in World War II. He went back to school at Northern Colorado University and the University of Michigan and earned master's degrees. Throughout his academic career, Maurice published over 732 scholarly articles. He hosted the first International Viola Congress in America at Michigan University in 1975 and later became a member of the Board of Directors.
