Collection contains original holograph and annotated manuscript for Zane Grey's novel The Water Hole from 1927. It is signed and titled by Zane Grey in ink at the top of the first leaf, with numerous holograph ink inscriptions and changes to the text. The numerous ink corrections to the typescript average about ten per page, and while most are altering proper names, there are also insertions, deletions and changes of other words, and in a few instances whole sentences are added. The typescript is accompanied by an 8 X 10” photo of Loren Grey fishing beside a river, holding a freshly caught fish with an inked notation on the reverse. Complete manuscripts of Grey are scarce. Another typed version of this story resides at the Ohio Historical Society.

Grey turned “The Water Hole” into a serial publication (Collier's, 1927) and published in novel form. It was then made into a movie the following year (a silent film, directed by R. Richard Jons) and released in the United States on August 25, 1928. In 1954 the novel was published in book form, with the title changed to “Lost Pueblo.” It was reprinted again in 1965. The summary of the novel is given in BYU Scholar Search: “Rich easterner Janey Endicott comes to Arizona with her father, where she is bored until she meets archeologist Phillip Randolph, who is investigating ancient Indian pueblos in the midst of the West's wild culture.”
