Scope and Contents
Collection contains the mission diaries of John and Mahonri M. Steele. Included in the diaries of John are day to day descriptions of his time serving as a Mormon missionary, and serving in the Mormon Battalion. He also gives some family history and autobiographical information about his life prior to the journal. The journals written by Mahonri M. Steele tell about his time as a Mormon missionary to England and Scotland.

Biographical History
Mahonri M. Steele (1849-1923) was a carpenter and local official in Utah. He served a mission to England and Scotland from 1877 to 1878.
Mahonri Moriancumer Steele was born May 1, 1849 to John Steele and Catherine Campbell Steele in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1877, he was called to serve a mission, with his father, to England and Scotland. After serving for a few months, he returned home due to poor health conditions. He married Emily Bunker on April 19, 1869, and Mary Ellen Jepson in 11 May 1874. He had eleven children. He died September 18, 1923.
Biographical History
John Steele (1821-1903) was a farmer in Utah. He was a member of the Mormon Battalion, and served a number of missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
John Steele was born on March 21, 1821 to John and Nancy Steele in Holywood, Ireland. He married Catherine Campbell on January 1, 1840. In 1843, he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Shortly after joining the Church, he emigrated with his family to the United States. He served in the Mormon Battalion during the Mexican-American War. In 1850, he served a mission to Iron County, Utah. In 1855, he served a mission to Las Vegas, Nevada. From 1877 to 1893, he served a mission to England and Scotland with his son, Mahonri Moriancumer. He and his wife had ten children.
