The Central Overland California and Pike's Peak Express Company was a freighting company which supplied goods to the western United States. The route of the overland express initially went to the Southern states, but after the Civil War broke out, the trail was rerouted so that it went through Salt Lake City, Utah, typically using trails through Missouri and Denver. This move was chartered through Kansas Legislature in 1860. The company's president was William H. Russell, and the Overland Express became the parent company of the more widely known Pony Express. In 1862, however, both expresses became bankrupt, and the companies were purchased by Ben Holladay for a minimal sum in 1862.
