Scope and Contents note

Collection includes consist of a family group record with wife Anna Christina, two life stories written about Thorup, an autobiography written by Thorup, and two documents containing articles written by Thorup concerning pinnacle events that occurred throughout his life. It also includes a typescript of Thorup's journal, spanning the years 1880 to 1929. The last entry in Thorup's record is dated October 5, 1929. The entry appears to be written by a son, as he notes the death of both his father and mother. Thorup's wife Jensine died less than a month after her husband.

Biographical History

Herman Frederick Ferdinand Thorup (1849-1929) was a Mormon ecclesiastical leader in Utah. He served two missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Denmark.

Herman Thorup was born in Fredriksborg, Denmark on April 19, 1849. He was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1916, serving his first mission to South Sjcelland, Denmark from 1867 to 1868. At the age of twenty, he arrived in Utah to live with the main body of the Saints in 1869. Three years later, he was ordained a seventy. He married to Sophie Johnson on May 28, 1872. She died six years later, leaving three children behind her. The next year, Thorup served a second mission to Denmark. Shortly after his mission, he met and married Anna Christina Andersen in 1881. A year later, he also married Jensine Jensen. In April 1901, Thorup was set apart as one of the Presidents of the 138th Quorum of the Seventies and was a Senior President for thirteen years and a Seventy for thirty nine years. Thorup went blind in his final years, dying on September 9, 1929.
