Biographical History

Brigham Young, 1801-1877, was a carpenter, painter, glazier, and second prophet and president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Young was born at Whitingham, Windham County, Vermont. He married Miriam Works in 1824. Young was living in Mendon, New York when he joined the Latter-day Saints in 1832 and moved to Kirtland, Ohio. His Kirtland years were divided between missionary work and labor on the temple. He succeeded Thomas Marsh as president of the Quorum of Twelve. Young was a member of the Quorum of Twelve from 1835-1847. He was Church President from 1848-1877. Young directed the Latter-day Saint evacuation from Missouri, 1838-1839. He served a mission to England in 1839-1841. He served on the Nauvoo city council in 1841. In 1846-1848, he directed the Latter-day Saint migration from Nauvoo to Utah. Young served as Governor of Utah Territory in 1850, and he was Superintendent of Indian Affairs from 1851-1857. President Young directed colonization of hundreds of communities in the western United States. He died in Salt Lake City.
