Scope and Contents note

Collection contains photocopies of journals from Alfred A. Kofoed's mission to the "Friendly Islands" (Tonga). Towards the end of his mission, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints closed the Tonga mission (it was reopened in 1907). This event, along with the the daily life of a turn of the century Latter-day Saint missionary, is documented within Kofoed's journals. There are also a few entries given after he returned from his mission. The collection also contains photocopied photographs both acquired by and taken by Kofoed on his mission. The original journals and photographs are maintained by Steven Kofoed, grandson of Alfred A. Kofoed.

Biographical History

Alfred A. Kofoed (1870-1943) served a mission to Tonga for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Following his return he made his living as a farmer.

Alfred A. Kofoed (1870-1943) was born in Weston, Idaho in 1870. In 1895, he embarked on a mission to the "Friendly Islands" (Tonga) for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During his mission, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints closed the mission in which Kofoed was serving. Following his return, Kofoed married Lucy Severn Randall in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1898. Kofoed made his living as a farmer, alternating between residence in Idaho and Utah throughout his life. Kofoed died in Ogden, Utah at the age of 72.
