Scope and Contents note

The collection consists of correspondence, invitations, daybooks, planners, deeds, checks, receipts, traveling pamphlets, postcards, newspaper clippings, graduation and wedding announcements, and photographs. Collection contains mostly the correspondence of Emily Carlisle (Mrs. H.C. Carlisle), especially between Emily and her daughter Isabelle, 1894-1957.

Biographical History

The Carlisle family consists of Emily Stevenson McDonald Carlisle who married Harvey Cartwright Carlisle. They had two children, Isabelle and Frank.

Emily Stevenson McDonald Carlisle was born on 6 September 1886 in Holladay, Salt Lake, Utah to Francis McDonald and Emily Rozella Stevenson. She married Harvey Cartwright Carlisle on 19 July 1923 in Salt Lake City. She had two children, Isabelle and Frank. She died 24 January 1975 in San Luis Obispo, California.

Biographical History

Isabelle Carlisle was born on 9 August 1925 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Harvey Cartwright Carlisle and Emily Stevenson McDonald. She married Grant Packard on 15 August 1955 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She died 18 July 2000 in San Luis Obispo, California. Based on the correspondence in the collection, Isabelle spent time abroad, as letters to her mother and brother are from various states and European countries in the early 1950s.

Biographical History

Frank McDonald Carlisle was born 12 March 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Harvey Cartwright Carlisle and Emily Stevenson McDonald. He died 27 June 1987 in New York. From the correspondence it seems that he worked as a teacher.
