Biographical History

Walter Claude Orem was a Utah businessman involved in the railroads. Mr. Orem was born in Ray County, Missouri, 23 May 1873, the son of A. J. Orem and Martha A. Leabo. His father, who was formerly a school teacher and later a merchant, and his mother were both of English ancestry. Mr. Orem went to Salt Lake City in 1890. Later he attained success in copper and coal mining, with interests in Utah and Nevada. He was president of the Nevada Copper Belt Railroad and treasurer and director of the Castle Valley Railroad Company.

Custodial History

The collection was a gift of the family of William W. Orem, the son of Walter Claude, 437 North Painter Ave., Whittier, California, in March 1961. The majority of the files and records of Walter C. Orem were destroyed by his son, William, during the summer of 1960, according to his Feb. 27, 1961 letter to Ralph W. Hansen, BYU MSS Librarian - see MSS Librarian's correspondence file.

Separated Materials

Two photographs of Walter Claude Orem and 24 photographs (and one negative for one of the 24) of the Salt Lake and Utah Railroad were transferred to the Photograph Archives of Special Collections, Brigham Young University. Reproduction rights on photographs rest with the photographer, the subject, and Brigham Young University. A motion picture film in two parts entitled "Orem Railroad" is housed in the EMS Film Vault (#37 and #38) under the care of Jim Baird. It is available for viewing.
