Franklin William Marchant Hawaiian mission diaries

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: MSS 4156

Scope and Contents note

Seven volumes of Franklin William Marchant’s diaries. Photocopied. The diaries cover Marchant’s missions to the Sandwich Islands (1881-1884 and 1906-1908). Marchant writes his first three diaries in daily entries: in the fourth volume, he begins to write in chapters. He writes about the social structure of Hawaii in 1884, with the Germans in the aristocracy. He makes friends with a Catholic man who offers to send the missionaries’ mail for them. The fifth journal, 1902-1905, contains song lyrics, thoughts about the gospel and names of people instead of regular entries. His sixth diary covers his second mission to Hawaii. It, like the first three diaries, is written in daily entries again: sometimes days spent doing the same thing are grouped together in the same sentence. Marchant helps regulate the affairs of the Church in Hawaii. The Church is young there and complications arise. At the end of the seventh journal is an obituary for two people: Oscar F. Lyons and John Alma Marchant. John Alma Marchant was Franklin’s older brother.
