Scope and Contents

Original manuscript of William Frederick Zimmer’s diary for the year 1877, including accounts of the Lame Deer and Bear Paw Mountain battles.

There are copies of documents about Zimmer (obtained by Larry and Claire Sklenar) from the National Archives, including pension records (1895-1920), a letter about his birth (1913), medical exam records (1891-1925) and widow pension records (1938).

This diary was compiled from field notes and was meant to describe a year in the life of a cavalryman for an unidentified person in Ohio.

Biographical History

Zimmer was a German immigrant (by way of Canada) who served in the Civil War and for several enlistments with the 2nd Cavalry in the West.

William Frederick Zimmer was born near Breslau, Germany on March 4, 1847. He moved with his parents to the United States in 1854. Zimmer was enlisted in the 2 Regiment of the United States Cavalry on September 19, 1876. He married Nellie Belle Garman (born 1866) in 1906 in Ohio. He passed away in Independence, Ohio on July 10, 1936. His wife and two children were still living in 1938.
