Scope and Contents

The collection consists of material documenting Mark Cannon's career in political science, including his service as assistant to Chief Justice Warren Burger and his involvement in the Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution, as well as with the Institute of Public Administration and the Supreme Court in general. This includes political research and correspondence, addresses and articles (written by Cannon or others), accounts of political travels, Bicentennial committee and planning papers and memorabilia (posters, newspapers and clippings, calendars, etc.), as well as general professional files and folders on various political topics, etc. Dated 1960-2006.

Biographical History

Mark Wilcox Cannon (1928- ) was a Harvard graduate who served several political leadership positions.

Mark Wilcox Cannon was born in 1928. He earned his B.A. from the University of Utah in Political Science and Economics; an M.P.A. from Harvard in Public Administration; and his M.A. and Ph.D., also both from Harvard University, both in Political Science and Government.

Cannon has served as Administrative Assistant to Congressman Henry Aldous Dixon, 1956-1960; Legislative Assistant to Senator Wallace F. Bennett, 1961-1963; Chairman, BYU Political Science Department, 1961-1964; Director of the Venezuelan Urban Development Project, IPA, 1964-1965; Director of International Programs, IPA, 1965-1968. Most notably, Mark served as Administrative Assistant to the Chief Justice Warren Berger of the Supreme Court, 1972; Executive Director, Judicial Fellows Program, 1973-77; Staff director, Bicentennial commission, 1987; owner and co-partner, Geneva Steel Mill, Provo, 1988. Mark Cannon is the author or co-author of 5 political books and 25 articles.
