James Jack was born November 21, 1829, in Perthshire, Scotland, to John Jack and Margaret Couper Jack. In February 1851 James was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Two years later, on February 11, 1853, he married Jemima Innes, with whom he had eight children. He immigrated to Salt Lake City shortly after his marriage. He served simultaneously as the treasurer of the Utah Territory and the chief clerk to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
