Scope and Contents note
Nine files containing miscellaneous material from newspapers and other sources on the LDS Church--mostly negative publicity. Includes articles on LDS prophet Ezra Taft Benson's dissident son, Steve Benson; Bo Gritz, ultra-conservative Mormon presidential candidate; Ervil LeBaron's Mormon break-off church, called the Church of the First Born of the Lamb of God; several letters written to CAN (Cult Awareness Network) by Mormon dissidents; polygamists in Colorado City; Clarence St. Pier Leake, who held temple workers hostage; Dan and Ronald Lafferty, charged with murder after joining fundamentalist polygamy sects; issues of the periodical "Exposing Mormonism: The Utah Evangel"; anti-Mormon pamphlets published by various groups; Mark Hoffman; the excommunication of various Mormon scholars/intellectuals in the 1990s; and various other topics. One folder contains printed material on religious toleration published by the Foundation for Religious Freedom in Los Angeles, California.

Custodial History note
Material was collected by a member of the media affairs committee for the Church of Scientology in southern California and then given to the Council for Public Affairs of the LDS Church. Steve Gilliland and Gaye Smith, both of whom served on the LDS Council, then donated the materials to BYU.
