Charles Bement and Alice Bement Fletcher correspondence
Scope and Contents
Twelve letters written between Charles and his half-sister Alice. Also contains one letter from Maria Josephine Hill Searle to Sarah Julia Hill Bement, Alice's mother. Most of the letters are written by Charles in Kanosh, Utah, and sent to Alice in Salt Lake. However, two of the letters were written by Charles while he was on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Illinois. The letters deal primarily with family and local matters. Some letters are fairly detailed regarding local news in the Kanosh area.

Biogrpahical History
Alice Matilda Bement, born 5 January 1855, was a daughter of Sarah Julia Hill and Bingham Bement. Alice planned to marry William H. Fletcher, but he was killed on 10 September 1874 in a blasting accident in a quarry in Cottonwood Canyon. She was sealed to him two months after his death. She died in Salt Lake City on 5 July 1929. Charles Henry Bement, a son of Melissa Russell and Bingham Bement, was born 22 November 1847 in Mishawaka, New Hampshire, and died 20 February 1903 in Kanosh, Utah. He married Margaret Annie Prows (1869-1946) on 21 October 1885.
Biographical History
Charles Henry Bement was born to Bingham B. Bement and Melissa Russell on November 22, 1847, in New Hampshire. At the age of four, he crossed the plains to Utah with the Henry. W. Miller Company. He arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in 1852. He married Margaret Annie Prows and died on February 20, 1903, in Kanosh, Utah.
Biographical / Historical
Sarah Julia Hill Bement was born on November 21, 1830, in Peterborough, New Hampshire to Leonard Hill and Sarah (Sally) Forbrush. On June 30, 1850, Hill married Bingham Bement in Pottawattamie, Iowa. She departed for the Salt Lake Valley with the Henry W. Miller company on July 8, 1852 and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on September 10, 1852. She was the mother of five children. She died at the age of 77 on May 4, 1908, and was buried in Salt Lake City, Utah.
