Scope and Contents

Collection contains correspondences, pictures, family memorabilia, newspaper clippings, awards and certificates. The scrapbooks relate to J. D. Boyd Jr., the sheriff in Provo from 1920 to 1930, John David Boyd III, George Edward Boyd, Sadie B. Peay, John David Boyd Sr., and J. D. Boyd and Hannah. The collection contains two cartons of different artifacts of John Boyd Jr.'s time as the sheriff known as "scorge of the bootlegger" and artifacts from Johnny Boyd relating to World War II. The collection also contains many unique photographs as well as papers of John Boyd Sr., dating from between 1839 and 1996.

Biographical History

Ida Lucile Boyd Reid (1922-2006) was a Brigham Young University student and worked as a secretary for the Geneva Steel Plant.

Ida Lucile Boyd Reid was born on December 3, 1922 in Heber City, Utah, to Hannah Peterson Boyd and John David Boyd Jr., a sheriff of Utah County. She graduated from the Brigham Young High School and later attended Brigham Young University. Ida Boyd married Arvil Shields Reid on November 4, 1942 in Provo, Utah; the marriage was later sealed in the Manti Temple on July 1, 1952. During the Second World War she worked at the Geneva Steel Plant. She later worked as a secretary at Brigham Young High School and also as a secretary for the Provo School District where she worked for eighteen years. Ida Boyd Reid and her husband Arvil were the parents of two children, Leslie Ann Reid Gledhill and Becky Sue Reid Dayton. Ida Lucile Boyd Reid died in Provo, Utah on December 9, 2006.

Biographical History

The Boyd family were lawmen in the West. John David Boyd (1839-1917), an immigrant from the United Kingdom, worked as a deputy sheriff in Cochise County, Arizona. His son, John Boyd Jr. (1871-1963), also known as J.D., worked as a sherrif in Provo, Utah in the 1920s. J.D.'s daughter, Ida Lucile Boyd Reid (1922-2006), later worked to preserve the Boyd family heritage.

Ida Boyd Reid collection of John Boyd Sr. family papers contains papers, photographs, clippings, and scrapbooks related to the Boyd family. Much of the collection is regarding John Boyd Jr., a colorful Provo sheriff known as "scourge of the bootlegger."
