Biographical History

Newbern I. Butt was a researcher and assistant professor, on the library staff from 1922 to 1968. Butt was born November 2, 1890, in Lehi, Utah, a son of William Francis and Laura Ellen Bushman Butt. In 1923, he married Ethel Cutler, professor of home economics at Brigham Young University. They had two children. He is the author or coauthor of four books and more than a hundred pamphlets. The best-known volume is The Fruits of Mormonism, which he coauthored with Franklin S. Harris. His vast compilation and publishing of indexes helped to locate vital and authoritative information concerning the personnel, history, and doctrines of the Church up to 1965. He chaired the Brigham Young University History Committee. On July 14, 1969, Newbern I. Butt passed away in LeGrande, Oregon.
