Administrative History

Argosy pictures was an independent film company organized to give John Ford and Merian C. Cooper creative freedom for motion picture production. Working with Walter Wanger Productions, RKO, Republic, and MGM, Argosy produced ten films between 1940 and 1953: The Long Voyage Home, The Fugitive, Fort Apache, Three Godfathers, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Mighty Joe Young, Wagon Master, Rio Grande, The Quiet Man, and The Sun Shines Bright. Noted for collaborations with writers James Warner Bellah, Frank Nugent, and Dudley Nichols; cinematographer Winton Hoch; and effects animator Willis O'Brien.

Custodial History

The material was acquired in 1986 from a mechanical engineer. He received the records as payment for work done for the niece of an unnamed Argosy board member. The niece inherited the papers upon the death of that board member.
