Scope and Contents note

Contains personal and professional papers, paraphernalia, government and civic organization documents, newspapers, photographs, and correspondence relating to Dixon's service in municipal administrative positions and in other civic and private organizations. Includes pamphlets, speeches, and advertisements used in his election campaigns for Provo City Clerk and Mayor. Contains Provo City Annual Reports (1963-1973),municipal tax information, and correspondence with federal and state legislators and ministries (state and federal dept.) regarding city projects and their funding. Also contains city council minutes, speeches, and correspondence with city and state officials and newspaper articles detailing the history of Provo, especially during his term as mayor. The collection contains documents and newspaper clippings concerning Dixon's participation in social organizations, including the Mormon Battalion, Sons of the Utah Pioneers, AARP (American Association of Retired People), and the Kiwanis Club. Includes rosters, minutes, organizational manuals, and correspondence regarding the above groups.

Biographical History

Verl G. Dixon (1908-2001) was a politician and community leader in Provo, Utah.

A lifelong resident of Provo, Utah, Verl G. Dixon, was a respected public servant and administrator. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1932 and attended Columbia University. Active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dixon served a mission to France, Belgium, and Switzerland from 1929-1931, worked in the youth programs, and served in several Provo bishoprics. In 1943, he married Adryne Hodson in Salt Lake City, UT. His wife died shortly thereafter while Dixon was overseas. During World War II Dixon enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served from 1943-1945. On returning to Provo, he began his municipal administrative career by serving as the Utah County Clerk. He later served as County Commissioner, Mayor of Provo (1962-1973), head of the Utah Association of County Officials, and the head of the Utah Municipal League. Dixon also served the community and state in various capacities such as President of the local AARP chapter, President of the local Kiwanis Club, President of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers Club, Major in the Mormon Battalion, and chairman of his 25th college reunion. He was an active supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and worked at the National Headquarters for three years.

Custodial History note

The papers were taken from Verl Dixon's home (719 E. 2730 N., Provo, UT 84604) and donated by Mrs. Mary Ellen Dixon Getts, daughter of the late Verl Dixon, to the L. Tom Perry Special Collections in 2001. Prior to donation, the donor reviewed and removed various materials from these files, taking them out of order. At present the materials are placed in subject clusters and need further processing. Parts of this collection were previously held in four different collection installments, under Accession #'s: A74-171, A76-170, A80-279, and A2001-197. All of these parts are now present under Mss 1767.
