Biographical History

John Crook was born on 11 October 1831, in Lancashire, England, to Daniel Crook and Margaret Kay. His parents joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1840, and John was baptized in 1847. John and his family left England for Utah in 1851. His father died in Kanesville (Council Bluffs), Iowa soon after their arrival. They lived in the area for 5 years before they were able to make the journey to Utah in 1856.

Soon after the family arrived in Utah, John married Mary Giles on 6 September 1856 in Provo, Utah. Together they had nine children and eventually settled Heber City, Utah, in the Provo River Valley. John helped lay out the city and established a farm in the area. He was also president of a local coal mining company.
