The collection contains records for the Saltair Beach Company, including accounting records, business licenses, minute books, legal contracts, general ledgers, profit/loss documents, balance sheets, cash receipts, accounts payable/receivable, payroll time sheets, advertising scrapbooks, cancelled bond certificates, bather counts, and bacteriological readings. It also contains records for the Salt Lake, Garfield & Western Railway Company, including reports, trial balances, ledgers, freight receiving records, coupons, ticket records, licenses, contracts, correspondence, payment records, records of investments, stocks and bonds, transcripts of court cases and ICC financial reports. It covers approximately 1861 to 1961.

Administrative History

The Saltair Railway was established in June 1891 by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The railway aimed to provide passenger service from Salt Lake City, Utah to the Great Salt Lake. In 1892 the name of the company was changed to the Salt Lake & Los Angeles Railway.

The Salt Lake & Los Angeles Railway was established in 1892 in a renaming of the earlier Saltair Railway. The company was owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and provided passenger service to the Saltair Resort. On March 18, 1906 the railway was sold to a group of Latter-day Saint businessmen, including Nephi Clayton, C.W. Nielson, and J.E. Langford. Then, on October 18, 1916, the company changed its name to the Salt Lake, Garfield & Western Railroad.

The Salt Lake, Garfield & Western Railway Company was organized in October 18, 1916 in a renaming of the Salt Lake and Los Angeles Railroad. The railroad was owned by a group of Latter-day Saint businessman, including Nephi Clayton, C.W. Nielson, and J.E. Langford. The company provided passenger and freight railway service between Salt Lake City, Utah and the Saltair Resort on the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake.

Administrative History

The Saltair Beach Company was organized in June 1891 with George Q. Cannon and other authorities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as directors and Isaac A. Clayton as secretary. The built and operated the Saltair Resort, located on the southern shore of the Great Salt Lake, which opened on June 8, 1893. On March 18, 1906, the Church sold its interests in Saltair to a group of Latter-day Saint businessmen, including Nephi Clayton, C.W. Nielson, and J.E. Langford. In 1918, the Saltair Beach Company was purchased by the Salt Lake, Garfield & Western Railway.

Arrangement

The collection was reorganized between its donation in 1977 and its processing in 1987. When it was rehoused in 2008, it remained in same 1987 order, only large items were removed from cartons and put into oversized boxes.

Custodial History

The Harold B. Lee Archives staff obtained the collection from the railroad offices in Salt Lake City in 1977 and transferred them directly to the archives.
