Scope and Contents

The folder contains a photograph of a printed broadside and a photonegative of the item. Young writes to the "Citizens of Utah" and warns them that an "armed, mercenary mob" is marching against them in 1857. He outlines the Mormons' grievances against the federal government and states that they are being unjustly persecuted. He forbids all armed forces from coming into Utah "under any pretence whatever," orders that the forces of the territory be ready to march "at a moment's notice" to repel any invasion, and declares martial law in the territory.

Biographical History

Brigham Young was the territorial governor of Utah and the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church). Brigham Young was born on 1 June 1801, in Whitingham, Vermont, to John Young and Abigail (Nabby) Howe. He married Miriam Works on 8 October 1824, and they had two children. After her death, he married Mary Ann Angel on 18 February 1834, and they had six children. He was baptized and was ordained an elder on 14 April 1832, by Eleazer Miller after two years of studying Mormonism. Young marched with Zion’s Camp in 1834, and served a mission to Canada in 1832 and in 1835, missions to the eastern states in 1835-37, and missions to England in 1839-41. He was called ordained an apostle on 14 February 1835. Young attended the Hebrew School in 1835-36. He led the Saints to Utah and became the second prophet and President of the Church on 5 December 1847. Young died on 29 August 1877, in Salt Lake City.
